BARISCIANO
Barisciano is one of the historical villages that guard the most authentic identity of the Gran Sasso territory. Located in the heart of the Abruzzo Apennines, within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, the town rises in a panoramic position between the Navelli Plain and the mountain reliefs leading towards Campo Imperatore.
The medieval village arose between the 6th and 8th centuries following the abandonment of the nearby Roman towns of Furfo and Peltuinum, gradually becoming a fortified and strategic settlement for controlling the territory.
Walking through its streets today means passing through centuries of history: narrow alleys, stone arches, inner courtyards and glimpses that tell of the life of Apennine communities. The enclosed castle, of which important evidence still remains, recalls the ancient medieval defence system that protected the inhabitants and agricultural activities.
The landscape surrounding Barisciano is characterised by cultivated fields, plateaus and high pastures that have accompanied the area's pastoral activities for centuries. The tradition of transhumance has left a deep mark on the local culture, made up of ancient gestures, slow rhythms and a strong sense of community.
As the Gran Sasso's storytelling village, Barisciano invites the visitor to an authentic experience, where history, nature and collective memory intertwine in a tale that continues to this day.
