CAPESTRANO
Capestrano is a village rich in history located in the Tirino Valley, one of Abruzzo's most fascinating natural areas. The village stands on a hill at an altitude of about 465 metres, in a panoramic position between the Navelli plateau and the Gran Sasso massif.
The history of Capestrano has its roots in antiquity. Here stood the ancient Vestine city of Aufinum, of which necropolises and important archaeological evidence remains.
It is precisely from this territory that the famous Capestrano Warrior, one of the most important statues of pre-Roman Italic art and an identity symbol of Abruzzo, comes.
The village preserves important historical architecture, including the Piccolomini Castle, which dominates the village and recounts the period when Capestrano was a marquisate and principality under important noble families.
A few kilometres from the centre is also the Abbey of San Pietro ad Oratorium, one of the masterpieces of Abruzzo's Romanesque architecture.
Capestrano is today one of the ideal places to discover the Tirino area, among nature, archaeology and agricultural traditions.
