Castelvecchio Calvisio

Castelvecchio Calvisio is one of the most picturesque villages in the Gran Sasso territory and represents an extraordinary example of Apennine medieval architecture. Located at the foot of the Gran Sasso massif, inside the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, the village still retains the authentic atmosphere of mountain villages where time seems to pass slowly.

The historic centre is characterised by a very particular urban structure, elliptical in shape, typical of fortified medieval villages. This conformation arose from defensive and community needs: stone houses were built next to each other to create a natural protection against external attacks.
