San Pio delle Camere
San Pio delle Camere is located on the Navelli plateau and is one of the most characteristic historical centres in the Gran Sasso area. The town is built around an imposing medieval castle that dominates the village from above.
The origins of the village date back to the Middle Ages, when the people of the area built a defensive system capable of controlling the communication routes of the plateau.
The castle is still today the most recognisable element of the landscape. Its walls tell a long history of battles, transformations and community life.
The historic centre preserves narrow streets, arches and stone houses that bear witness to the organisation of rural communities in the Apennines.
The surrounding area is characterised by cultivated fields, pastures and hills stretching up to the Gran Sasso mountains.
San Pio delle Camere is an important stop for those who want to learn about the medieval history and agricultural landscape of the Navelli plateau.
