The Church of Santa Maria della Pietà is one of Abruzzo's most evocative symbols, situated at an altitude of 1,482 metres along the path leading to the renowned Rocca Calascio. Built in 1596, according to tradition, on a site linked to the local population's victory over a band of brigands, it features a rare octagonal floor plan in the Baroque style. The building is topped by a distinctive eight-ribbed dome with a lantern, making it easily recognisable in the mountain landscape. Inside, a painting of the miraculous Virgin and a sculpture of Saint Michael the Archangel are kept. Nestled within the extraordinary setting of the Gran Sasso National Park, the church is only accessible on foot and has also become an iconic film location over time.
