CALASCIO
Calascio is one of the most iconic villages in inland Abruzzo and one of the landmarks of the Gran Sasso. Situated at an altitude of over 1,200 metres, the village dominates a spectacular landscape of mountains, plateaus and high pastures.
The village retains a mediaeval layout characterised by stone houses, narrow alleys and small squares that convey the authentic atmosphere of Apennine mountain villages. Walking through these streets means coming into contact with a history deeply linked to sheep farming and transhumance.
Just above the village is Rocca Calascio, one of the highest fortifications in Europe, located at an altitude of over 1400 metres. Its spectacular location and the panorama over Campo Imperatore have made it one of the most photographed places on the Gran Sasso.
Over the years, the fortress has also become an important international film set, helping to make this place known throughout the world.
Today, Calascio represents one of the most suggestive gateways to the Gran Sasso territory. Between trekking, excursions and cultural routes, the village offers a slow and contemplative travel experience, immersed in nature and history.
