Nestled in the heart of Abruzzo, Bominaco Abbey preserves precious evidence of Benedictine monastic life and its cultural and religious significance. The abbey church of S. Maria Assunta, built between the late 11th and early 12th centuries, displays an elegant fusion of styles: a simple and monumental façade, apses decorated with hanging arches and capitals reminiscent of antiquity, and a contrast between the plain left side and the richly adorned right side. The Oratory of S. Pellegrino, meanwhile, bears witness to devotion to the saint, paralleling the increasing centrality of the Virgin Mary in the main church.

Inside, the central nave, wider than the side aisles, is divided by columns with unique capitals that reinterpret the Corinthian model, while the side aisles are covered by exposed roof trusses. Among the liturgical furnishings, the ambos and the abbatial chair, both commissioned by Abbot Giovanni in 1180, reveal a strong desire for autonomy from the diocese of Valva and a refined artistic taste, with decorations of vines, animals and sacred symbols. The altar from 1223, the reassembled ciborium and the Paschal candelabrum complete the ensemble, with a rarity of elegance and sophistication for medieval Abruzzo.

The Abbey of Bominaco is therefore an extraordinary example of medieval art and architecture, where Benedictine tradition, classical heritage, and local originality merge into a harmonious complex, a testament to the religious and cultural history of the region.
