The Caporciano Castle, also known as the fortified enclosure of the village, dominates the hill at an altitude of about 850 metres, offering a spectacular view of the plateau and the Gran Sasso, Maiella and Sirente mountain ranges. The earliest records date back to the 12th century, when the village and castle were linked to the religious power of the local monasteries and the emerging feudal organisation. The original structure consisted of a main tower and triangular walls, with minor towers and two access gates, designed to defend the settlement and control strategic routes. Over the following centuries, the castle underwent extensions and transformations, until it became a fortified palace in the 16th and 17th centuries, incorporating residential buildings and the churches of St Benedict and Our Lady of Sorrows.

The pinnacle tower, with a quadrangular base and standing 19 metres high, represents the best-preserved element, a testament to its original military function; over time, it was transformed into the church's bell tower, without losing its robust and monumental character. Recent restorations, which began in 1990 and were completed in 1995, have consolidated the masonry using modern techniques, rebuilt the original floors, staircases, and battlements, and rediscovered medieval doors and windows. The intervention has restored the tower and the castle to their historical grandeur, preserving a heritage that tells centuries of military, religious, and social life in Caporciano.
